If you live in the New River Valley region, especially Blacksburg, you almost certainly have met a refugee. They are our neighbors, friends, colleagues, classmates and a part of our community. Through the Blacksburg Refugee Partnership, the Blacksburg community has worked together to create a welcoming home for refugee families for the past 10 years. With each new connection and family supported, our community continues to grow stronger each year!
Each year, millions of people are forced to leave their homes due to conflict, persecution, or disaster, and then struggle to find safe, stable, long-term places to rebuild their lives. The crisis is not only that people are forced to flee. It is that receiving countries often lack the local infrastructure and community support needed for refugees to successfully restart their lives.
Blacksburg Refugee Partnership is a volunteer-led nonprofit supporting refugee families as they rebuild their lives in the New River Valley. Since 2016, BRP has helped 90 individuals from Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Burundi, Somalia and Myanmar access housing, healthcare, education, employment, and community support, helping families build safe, stable, and independent futures.
At BRP, we believe that every refugee family deserves not only safety, but the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity, stability, and community support. We believe resettlement is more than arrival. It is a shared journey of connection, belonging, and long-term empowerment.
Blacksburg Refugee Partnership’s approach is holistic. We provide ongoing support to help our refugee families fully integrate into American society, become self-reliant, and achieve fulfilling lives.
From setting up housing, accessing health care and education to navigating transportation, mentoring and celebrating milestones, our volunteers work alongside families through every stage of the resettlement process. Through compassion and community support, we aim to empower refugee families to achieve independence while creating a more welcoming New River Valley for everyone.
