Sometimes, a miracle starts with a phone call—and becomes real through the hands and hearts of many.
Just a little over two months ago, we learned about an Afghan family of three—parents and their toddler, with a baby on the way—facing a terrifying deadline. After working alongside the U.S. government, they were targeted by the Taliban and forced to flee to protect their lives. Though they had been granted Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) status, they were stranded in a refugee camp and running out of time.
Thanks to a connection with a journalist who had met the family while reporting in Afghanistan—and a nonprofit that covered their airfare—they had a narrow window to reach safety in the U.S.
That’s when Blacksburg Refugee Partnership stepped in.
Our volunteers quickly began collecting donated furniture and household essentials. One week later, we were able to welcome the family with a comfortable, safe place to stay and immediate medical care. Our community stepped up to support them financially as they adjusted and began their job search. Their baby was born shortly after their arrival, and with the help of our community, they soon moved into a furnished apartment. Just days later, the father began working—taking the first steps toward rebuilding their life in safety.
This wasn’t just luck. It was a miracle made possible by people like you.
Donate today and help us be ready for the next miracle.
Despite the new travel ban, many people in urgent need of safety are still eligible to come to the U.S. Every dollar goes toward housing, medical care, job support, and building community—because no one should have to face it alone.
