Brock Hughes Medical Center

Brock Hughes Medical Center began as a small “Free Clinic” located inside the health department, staffed entirely by volunteers who generously gave their time after hours to care for those in need. Since 1995, the clinic has grown tremendously and evolved in many ways to better serve our community.

Through the support of partners such as the Wythe-Bland Foundation (WBF), the Virginia Association of Free & Charitable Clinics, the Virginia Health Care Foundation, RX Partnership, VTMHI, and Big Walker Dentistry—along with many local donors, churches, businesses, and community organizations—BHMC has been able to continue providing essential medical, pharmaceutical, and preventive healthcare services to vulnerable populations.

Today, BHMC employs both full- and part-time staff, operates from our own facility thanks to the Wythe-Bland Foundation, and functions as a “hybrid” clinic. We care for uninsured patients as well as those with Medicaid, Medicare, or commercial insurance.

However, the need continues to grow:

• 30% of BHMC’s current patients are uninsured

• Revenue has declined due to changes and reductions in Medicaid funding

• The cost of living continues to rise each year, increasing the cost of healthcare and operations
