The Giles Community Garden was founded in 2014 for one simple purpose: "Feed My Sheep" by helping our low and no-income neighbors who live near the garden in Pearisburg with getting free, fresh vegetables. This mission soon expanded to include educational and community-building programing all centered around healthy food grown in the garden.
This summer, we are on track for 10 weeks of children's programming to include food education, food preparation, a nourishing meal, and cultivating new friendships with positive adult role models. We also provide free yoga and meditation classes for adults on a weekly basis from May through September at the garden.
Throughout our 10 years we have developed many partnerships with our community and the NRV, including helping to build NRV Thrive, the food access network for the NRV. Because of these partnerships, we can distribute food every month of the year to programs throughout Giles County.
This year for GiveLocalNRV, we are raising funds to help expand our work at the garden with a new Learning Center (see below for the proposed rendering.) This small but efficient space will be an open, airy, friendly space focused on education for health of body and mind.
It will include a handicapped accessible bathroom, open learning area suitable for yoga and meditation, and table and counter areas where we can educate folks on fresh food tasting, preparation, and preserving. The possibilities for the public use of the space include small comfortable meetings, public music venue, and deeper shared opportunities to build community around our beautiful garden.
Please consider making a donation to the future of Giles Community Garden as we continue to nourish, educate and cultivate community around healthy food.
