At Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley (Habitat NRV), we believe everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. A home is more than four walls, it is where families gather, children grow, and futures are built.

Why does affordable housing matter?

Today, too many families in the New River Valley are struggling to afford housing. Nearly 1 in 3 households are considered “cost-burdened,” meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs alone. In Blacksburg, the shortage of affordable housing continues to grow, especially for working families earning below the area’s median family income.

That’s why Habitat NRV is taking action.

Our approach to affordable homeownership

We are preparing to build 11 new affordable townhomes on Airport Road in Blacksburg; creating opportunities for families to achieve stability, security, and long-term success. Designed with affordability, accessibility, and community in mind, these homes will be located near schools, childcare centers, shopping, and public transportation, giving families the resources they need to thrive.

The impact of affordable housing

Affordable homeownership changes lives. Stable housing leads to improved health, stronger educational outcomes for children, greater financial security and generational wealth, and safer communities. When families have a place to call home, they can focus on building brighter futures instead of worrying about rising rent or housing instability.
