A whopping 24,000 adults in our New River Valley community struggle with reading.

Can you imagine how low-literacy skills impact one’s self-esteem and independence as well as ability to find and keep employment, navigate the healthcare system, and support a child's learning?

24,000 local adults struggle with reading. Together, we can create a community where every adult can achieve independence, empowerment -- and make their dreams come true -- with literacy. 

Now, more than ever, our community needs us. 

Literacy Volunteers of the NRV provides life-changing instruction for adults in reading, writing, math, basic computer skills, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and preparation for exams such as the GED and US Citizenship tests.  With the ongoing challenges in our post-pandemic world, our students dream of a whole new world of possibilities.  

NRV adults need literacy, language and digital skills now more than ever to understand critical health information, to access community resources when they need help, to obtain basic skills or a GED to secure employment, to combat social isolation, to perform online-job searches, to help their children with homework, and to participate in this new virtual world.

• $100 - Provides family literacy instruction to one parent to help him/her learn to read with children
