Join Summer Musical Enterprise in spreading joy throughout the New River Valley!
Summer Musical Enterprise strives to bring quality musical theatre to the New River Valley utilizing one of the area's finest resources: its people. Anyone can participate, as is evidenced by the ever-changing members of our cast and crew from show to show. We are theatre for the community, by the community .
We provide community theatre opportunities to showcase the extensive talent represented in the New River Valley and to provide opportunities for community members, including youth, to experience and participate in all aspects associated with a large scale theatrical production, including selecting, organizing, casting, and obtaining financing for the presentation of a summer stage musical.
We strive to bring entertainment that can be enjoyed by the whole family, whether you're participating in the production, or simply sitting in the audience. Summer Musical Enterprise (SME) was formed in 1992 and has produced a major musical every summer from 1992 to present.
Timeline Over the Past Decade
Summer Musical Enterprise is excited about seeking new opportunities to promote theatre arts.
*SME produced our first fully-staged holiday show in 2015.
*2016, we presented our first revival, and returned to The Music Man for our 25th summer production.
*2017 we brought Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to record breaking crowds.
*2018, we were a bit more cutting edge as we brought Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd to the NRV, followed by A Gift from SME to You; A Christmas Revue.
*2019 we dove under the sea to bring Disney's The Little Mermaid to life on stage (banner photo above by Bryant Altizer). With stunning, professional sets and costumes and amazing lighting and outstanding local talent, it was a magnificent show!
*2020-2021 After two summers of being dark, we produced a specially licensed Broadway Revue, All Together Now, to great success!
*2022, finally, we made our triumphant return to the Mainstage at Haymarket Theatre with Disney's Newsies with spectacular Broadway-style choreography.
*2023, we brought back one of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! Our first production of this show was in 2009.
*2024 we mounted our first Murder Mystery Last Call At Chez Mort at The Bad Apple Barn in Pembroke to sold out audiences. And then we brought the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious musical adventure Mary Poppins the Broadway Musical to the stage! This production included our local stars as always, along with professional flying effects by ZFX Inc., a professional set by Front Row Theatrical, and the piece de resistance, performing it in the state-of-the-art Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech.
*2025 we mounted another murder mystery to sold out audiences at The Junebug Center and Warm Hearth. And for our Mainstage summer show we brought The Wizard of Oz to the stage, again featuring flying effects by ZFX Inc. This was another revival show for us! Our first production of The Wizard of Oz was in 1997!
*2026 Now we revive another wonderful show, Fiddler on the Roof. Our first production was in 1995 starring the beloved Steve Brown as Tevye and Clare Fischer-Davies as Golde. Set in the village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.
With iconic and beloved songs such as “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” Fiddler on the Roof is the perfect mix of audience-pleasing humor and heart.
