SustainFloyd is a rural non-profit in the Blue Ridge Mountains that undertakes projects to support the environment, agriculture, renewable energy, and community well-being.
In this time of environmental and climate instability we see an increasing need for outreach with good questions and information for the community to consider. We are more than ever committed to developing sustainable initiatives in our local community and to sharing ideas in a wider arena.
Our project areas are:
Developing stronger local food systems:
Our Floyd Farmers Market is expanding. We are adding a second weekly market, extending the season and opening an online Farmers Market. All this increases the market for small local food business and brings access to great local food. We continue to match all purchases eligible for SNAP benefits, allowing more families to include healthy food in their diet. We also publish the Guide To Floyd Food, which lists all the small farmers and food producers, connecting local producers with local markets.
We are currently working on developing projects around waste reduction and simpler living styles. We will be publishing a guide to less waste along with organizing collection days for items that are harder to recycle. We are also looking to do more outreach with our Solar VoltzWagon, our mobile solar wagon which serves as an educational tool to explain how solar energy works, and why it is a good investment in the future.
Much of our outreach will center on developing the work we started with the Blue Ridge Eco Fair, in April 2021.
The 2021 Blue Ridge Eco Fair was a huge learning experience in taking our outreach to the next level. With over forty speakers addressing the question of "Making Choices that Matter' we presented a wide range of information and inspiration on ways to make an impact on a sustainable future through personal and community choices. Blue Ridge Eco Fair 2022 is now in the early stages of planning.
