               This Year's Focus:  Self-Advocacy Movement

People with disablities have raised their voices nationwide to say that they can and will speak for themselves.  The Self Advocacy movement has reached Virginia and the New River Valley.  The Self-Advocacy Alliance of New River Valley came together four years ago and supporting and promoting their advocacy efforts is now a core mission of the Arc of New River Valley.  Advocacy work is expensive.  It involves travel to Richmond to lobby our Representatives and Senator,  attending the state conference for additional training and to meet with other self-advocates from across the state, hosting local events in collaboration with Self Advocacy Alliance of Virginia to inform the community of the self-advocacy movement and to recruit more members.    Our goal is to raise $5,000.  Funds raised will make it possible for us to afford the travel costs and conference fees to send all self-advocates to Richmond and to the conference instead of only two at a time.   The voices of self-advocates are needed more than ever as Congress threatens to cut the Medicaid funding the people with disabilities depend on.
