Montgomery County 4-H

A nonprofit organization

4-H, the youth development education program of Virginia Cooperative Extension is rich with learning experiences in which young people partner with caring adults and volunteers in a fellowship unlike any other program available to youth today. Through 4-H, young people are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that emphasize 4-H's "learning by doing" philosophy of youth development.

Standing for head, heart, hands, and health, 4-H uses more than a century of experience in youth development programming to build strong, confident leaders.

Young people in the 4-H community learn leadership, citizenship, and a vast array of life skills that benefit them for the rest of their lives. Through school-based, after-school, and community clubs as well as camp settings, 4-H members pledge to build a better community, country, and world.

Montgomery County 4-H offers many programs and activities for area youth, ages 5 to 18.  Community, special interest, and in-school or after-school clubs or programs provide youth opportunities to engage in a wide range of educational projects such as animal sciences, natural resources and environmental education, STEM, consumer and financial education, citizenship, and much more.  In addition, Montgomery County 4-H offers day and residential camps, most notably Junior 4-H Camp held each year at the W. E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center in Wirtz, VA.  Through participation in these and other programs, youth have the opportunity to develop life and leadership skills.

Teen 4-H members build leadership skills through civic engagement activities and service.   Montgomery County 4-H offers leadership experiences for teens in a variety of settings; clubs, camps, leadership retreats, State 4-H Congress, and others.

Montgomery County 4-H programs are coordinated through the local Virginia Cooperative Extension office.  Extension 4-H staff work to recruit, screen, and train adult and teen volunteer leaders to provide 4-H opportunities that enhance the life experiences for Montgomery County youth, helping them to lead more productive and fulfilling lives and build promising futures.
