This year, thanks to generous sponsors, the Community Foundation of the New River Valley (CFNRV) is offering $25,000 in grants and prizes! Check out the information below about this year's awards along with details about the rules for the event.

The CFNRV can modify any rules, restrictions, or conditions if, in the sole judgment of the Board of Directors, such restriction or condition becomes unnecessary, incapable of fulfillment, or inconsistent with the charitable needs of the community. As such, the CFNRV reserves the right to deny or condition the distribution of prize grants if, in the judgment of its Board of Directors, such restriction or condition becomes necessary. Giving Day Rules

 2025 Grants & Prizes

This year, we are offering $25,000 in grants and prizes, with each award ranging from $500 to $1,500!  Please note that which donations count each grant and prize varies. Some allow "All donations", meaning that online donations made through givelocalnrv.org and offline donations (checks or cash) count. Others are "Online Donations Only", meaning that only online donations made through givelocalnrv.org count. 

Additionally, for most grants and prizes, overall donations count (all donations during the early giving period and the Giving Day itself.) The exceptions are: the Early Giving grant (only donations during the early giving period count) as well as Power Hours and Golden Tickets (only donations during the specific prize times count; see below for details.)

All Donations Count

All donations = donations made via givelocalnrv.org AND offline donations (checks or cash only) count for the following awards: Early Giving Grant, Most Money Raised Grants, Most Unique Donors Grants, and Power Hour Prizes.

Most money raised during the early giving period (June 1 to June 26 at 11:59a.)

$500 each / 6 prizes

Highest number of unique (unduplicated) donors in the specified one-hour period (see the schedule below.)

  • Kickoff: 12 - 1p
  • Happy Hour: 5 – 6p
  • Primetime: 8 – 9p

Thursday, 6/26

  • Early Bird: 5 – 6a
  • Coffee Break: 8 – 9a

Random chance drawings from online donations made within the specified hour (see the schedule below.)

  • 11a -12p (this Golden Ticket will selected after the last Power Hour of the event.)

Far Away Donor Prizes

$500 each / 2 prizes

Two random chance drawings from all online donations where the donor’s billing address is at least 2,000 miles away from the CFNRV office (1900 Kraft Dr SW, Blacksburg.) 

Any donation that meets this criteria during the early giving period & the giving day count.

All Donations Count, But...

Both online and offline donations count for these awards, but organizations have to meet specific criteria to qualify for the award. These awards are the Peer-to-Peer Prizes as well as three new grants (as of 2025): the Peer Segelke Environmental Grant, the Cranwell Family Foundation Arts & Culture Grant, and the Cranwell Family Foundation Education Grant.

For the category-specific grants: your organization's category is determined by the thematic area your organization selected in the sign-up process.

Peer Segelke Environmental Grant

$1,000 / 1 grant

Highest number of unique (unduplicated) donors overall (early giving & the giving day.) Only organizations focused on the environment and natural resource conservation count.

Peer-to-Peer prizes

  • $750 - 1st place
  • $500 - 2nd place (New prize in 2025!)

Top two organizations that raise the most money overall (early giving & the giving day) using the Peer-to-Peer tool. Only donations made on pages set up by individuals other than the organization’s admins count.

Cranwell Family Foundation Education Grant

$1,000 / 1 grant

Highest number of unique (unduplicated) donors overall (early giving & the giving day.) Only organizations focused on education count.

Cranwell Family Foundation Arts & Culture Grant

$1,000 / 1 grant

Highest number of unique (unduplicated) donors overall (early giving & the giving day.) Only organizations focused on arts and culture count.

Early Sign-up Bonus Prizes

Sign up for the 2025 Giving Day by 3/26 for a chance to win. Randomly selected. This year's winners are:

Orgs that best embody the spirit of the Giving Day, as decided by the CFNRV team after the event ends.

Best Video Prize 

1 Prize / Special Prize for 2025

Participants submitted 30-second videos for this prize (the deadline to submit a video was Friday, June 20 at 4 p.m.) for a chance to win an episode of Buzz Live! 

The winner will be selected by the CFNRV and Buzz4Good teams, then announced at the live Giving Day show at the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday, June 25.
