• Organizations classified as a 501c3 or a unit of government (such as a library) that serve Virginia's New River Valley are eligible to participate in the GiveLocalNRV Giving Day. 
• Your organization must be in good standing with the IRS. 
• We ask that a significant portion of your organization's services/programs serve the New River Valley (a minimum of 25% is preferred.) 
• Private non-operating foundations are not eligible to participate in this event. 
• Only organizations that register with givelocalnrv.org will be eligible for grants and prizes. There is no fee for organizations to register or use the givelocalnrv.org website.
• Only donations received between June 1 and noon on June 26 are eligible to be counted toward your Giving Day totals. See below for more details on what types of donations are allowed during this event.
• Mightycause's terms and conditions prohibit use of the platform for donation giveaways/incentives or other sellable items in return for donating. In other words, you can’t use the platform for a “give-to-get” campaign (e.g., things like “give $25 and you’ll get a t-shirt” are not allowed on the platform, nor can you sell items using the platform, such as event tickets.)

• Any individual may donate, whether they are donating from their personal or business funds. 
• Donations made through givelocalnrv.org to nonprofit organizations are 100% tax-deductible. 
• Donations irrevocable and will not be refunded.

Three types of donations are allowed for this event: online donations made through givelocalnrv.org, checks, and cash. Please see below for more details. New in 2025: we are no longer accepting wire transfers for this event.

Accepted Online Donations

• Only online contributions made through the givelocalnrv.org site from June 1 to noon on June 26 count toward the giving day totals. 
• Contributions on the givelocalnrv.org site may be made via credit card, debit card, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay or through your bank account (ACH.) 
• Tax receipts for online donations are automatically sent in the system. 

Accepted "Offline" Donations

• Cash and checks (referred to as "offline" donations in the system) are accepted and can be made directly to your preferred participating nonprofit organization. 
• Offline donations of cash and checks must be received between June 1 and noon on June 26 to count toward your Giving Day totals. 
• Offline donations that are under $1,000 are automatically approved in the system. For donations over $1,000, the CFNRV team will ask for verification of the details (a copy of the full front of the check.)
• If it is a check, it must also be dated during that period to count. 
• All offline donations must entered into the system no later than noon on Thursday, June 26 to count toward your giving day total.
• Please keep copies of all checks received. The CFNRV reserves the right to request a copy of any check to verify that the check was received during the giving period. 
• If you would like your donors who made offline donations to receive tax receipts, your organization must send those separately.

While the Giving Day event begins at noon on June 25, early giving opens on June 1. This allows nonprofits to fundraise for almost the entire month of June should they wish to. Any donation received through the GiveLocalNRV website between June 1 and noon on June 26 (when the event ends) counts toward your organization's Giving Day totals. 

Additionally, if your organization receives offline donations (cash or checks) during that time period, they are eligible to be added to your Giving Day totals provided the donation is received AND dated between June 1 - 26. All offline donations must be added to the system by noon on June 26 to count.

• Organizations must sign up for the 2025 GiveLocalNRV Giving Day by May 1 in order to be eligible to win grants and prizes. 
• Organizations are eligible to win one grant and up to three prizes. 
• Each grant and prize has different criteria. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the list!
• Results for Giving Day grants and prizes are preliminary and not final until announced by the CFNRV. Grants and prizes are awarded at the discretion of the CFNRV's Board of Directors.

Grants are worth $1,000 or $1,500. Organizations can only win one grant. If they qualify for more than one grant, they will be awarded the grant of higher monetary value. Prizes are worth either $500 or $750. In addition to winning a grant, organizations can win up to three prizes.

• 11 Grants: Early Giving (1), Most Money Raised (3), Most Unique Donors (3), Superstar (2)
  • New in 2025: Peer Segelke Environmental (1), Cranwell Family Foundation Arts & Culture (1), and Cranwell Family Foundation Education (1)
• 15 Prizes: Early sign-up (2), Power Hours (6), and Golden Tickets (5)
  • 2nd prizes added in 2025: Peer-to-Peer (2) and Far Away Donor (2)

• Early sign-up prize: if an organization wins one of these prizes, they are still eligible to win a giving day grant and up to two additional prizes.
• Power Hours and Golden Tickets: organizations are eligible to win either a Power Hour OR a Golden Ticket. Once an organization wins a Golden Ticket or Power Hour, they are not eligible to win other Power Hours or Golden Tickets during the 2025 event.
• The Far Away Donors and Peer-to-Peer awards are also prizes. Organizations can only win one Far Away Donor prize.

Organization size is determined by the organization’s operating budget. This number is provided by each organization during the sign-up process. Once sign-up closes on May 1, the full list of participating organizations will be sorted by budget size, then divided into thirds: the smallest third (starting at 0) will be categorized as “Small”, the next third will be categorized as “Medium”, and the final third will fall into the “Large” category. These categories vary each year depending on which organizations are participating. 

• Power Hours: designated one-hour periods during the giving day where the organization that has the highest number of unique donors will win additional funds. Both online and offline donations count toward these prizes.
• Golden Tickets: designated one-hour periods where each online gift enters a organization into a drawing to win prize money. We randomly select a gift at the end of the hour and that organization receives additional funds. Only online donations are eligible for these prizes. 

The Community Foundation of the New River Valley (CFNRV) will mail grant and prize checks in mid-July.
