The Lyric Theatre has been a gathering place for the Blacksburg community for more than 100 years.  It started operations in 1909, moving three times before finding its permanent home on College Avenue in 1930. At the time, the Lyric was only the third theatre in the state built for sound pictures. Pretty impressive for a rural town of only 1400 people! For more than 50 years the theatre thrived and became the center of cultural life for this small Appalachian town.

Sadly, the Lyric closed its doors in 1989, leaving the community with a profound sense of loss. In 1994, a group of dedicated citizens banded together to create The Lyric Council, Inc., determined to “Bring Back the Lyric.” It is in this spirit that we once again look to the community because right now we need your support now more than ever

There are several ways you can help:

Donate to our COVID-19 Recovery fund.
Contributions to this fund keep the Heart of Blacksburg beating by helping pay for staff wages and building expenses.

Donate to preserve this historic treasure.
Contributions to our capital improvement fund make a desperately needed marquee renovation, and other building improvements possible.

Finally, we hope you’ll continue to support the Lyric by coming out and enjoying a movie when it’s deemed safe to reopen!

Our priority is to keep you safe in the 477- seat theatre by assigning seats and limiting audience sizes to ensure proper social distancing. We will also vigilantly clean frequently touched surfaces and require all staff and volunteers to wear masks and gloves.

We are always grateful for the generous support of our community and cannot wait to welcome you back!

See you at the Lyric!
