Hello everyone! HERE IS OUR HANDMADE MUSIC SCHOOL STORY and why support for HMS is important. The mission of the Handmade Music School is to cultivate and strengthen community through experiences in music, dance, and art rooted in our Appalachian traditions. HERE IS WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:

The Handmade Music School was founded in 2016 to nurture and support the community around the Floyd Country Store and our local music and dance traditions. These traditions build bridges and invite new participants in. In our experiences over many years of producing culturally diverse programs for Southwest Virginia communities, the Handmade Music School is an essential way to build and strengthen community.

Providing opportunities for our community to connect through traditions that are the foundation of our regional identity, while exploring the deeper aspects of music making, creates and endorses cultural health. The Handmade Music School strives to create a thriving, cultural eco-system that is deeply rooted in our place in the Blue Ridge Mountains. People are welcomed in to be a part of it, parents learn with their kids and generations of a family find themselves connecting on the dance floor at the Friday Night Jamboree. 

We see this happening every day of our lives and the community surrounding the Handmade Music School is powerful and thriving. We invite anyone who is interested in connecting through these traditions to join us in building a healthy, diverse community that wants to take care of these traditions and each other. The Handmade Music School strives to cultivate and strengthen community through experiences in music, dance, and art rooted in our Appalachian traditions. 

HELP US SHARE THE MUSIC!

We are dedicated to teaching old time, bluegrass, and traditional music and dance from Floyd County, Virginia, and throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. The philosophy of The Handmade Music School is to “hand down” the songs and dances from the teacher to the student, phrase-by-phrase, and step by step -- the way it’s been taught in the Blue Ridge Mountains for centuries.

Your donations will fund operations for the Handmade Music School, provide support for our weekly Youth Stringband Program and Youth Get Together summer camps, and will help support our general operating costs and Share The Music Scholarship Fund. Your donations will help support our team in building upon existing opportunities and creating new vibrant music and dance opportunities. It's our mission to welcome everyone into the Handmade Music School community without finances getting in the way, and also to support the musicians and teachers that make these opportunities possible. 

In addition to youth programming at HMS, we are designed to serve everyone from 0 - 100 and currently have programming that serves all of these ages from Joy Jammers to our Harmonic Heritage project, we love to invite people into our circle of learning and we provide scholarships for all ages and people from our community and around the world.
