Giving Day hoop house tomatoes
The New River Valley Glean Team feeds and nourishes the hungry in our community by growing vegetables at 6 local gardens and high tunnel, gleaning excess produce from local farms, and purchasing 2 semi trucks full of potatoes. We deliver excess vegetables from Red Sun Farms and a local CSA. We distribute those nutritious unprocessed foods weekly to organizations that serve the hungry in Montgomery and Giles County.
We host two annual potato drop distribution events at the Christmas Store and donate to food providers across SW Virginia and parts of WV. We also donate seeds to VA Coop. Extensions, local growers in Haiti, and Soc. of St. Andrew who give them away nationwide.
In 2025, we donated 139,976 lbs of fresh vegetables and fruits valued at $290,614. Most of this was the two potato drops (42,000 lbs each). We spent $9,160, so for every dollar of cost, we provided $32 of food. We drove over 16,000 miles and provided over 2,300 hours of service.
