Our squad proudly serves the Town of Blacksburg and parts of Montgomery County with emergency medical and rescue services.  We provide these services  24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  We have nearly 200 members who volunteer their time to make this possible.  Our members come from a variety of different backgrounds, which helps make our squad as diverse as Blacksburg itself.  We have high school and college students, teachers, engineers, real estate agents, full-time parents, career paramedics, nurses, and a few doctors!

Emergency medical care 24 hours a day

When there is a call for help, there are trained professionals on-call at the station around the clock. Every provider has taken a four-month training course and passed a rigorous licensing exam (both written and practical tests) to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Some take additional training and testing to reach EMT-Advanced and Paramedic certifications. There are also probates under the watchful eye of a preceptor — even after passing the EMT exam, Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad requires additional training to become a cleared provider. This ensures that everyone receives the best high-quality care for a medical emergency.

There is also more than medical services

Our Technical Rescue teams get people out of situations that require special training and specialized equipment.

The Heavy Technical Rescue division includes Extrication, Trench, Structural Collapse, and Confined Space disciplines.

The Light Technical Rescue division includes Water (dive and swiftwater) Rescue, Cave Rescue, Vertical Rescue, and Search and Rescue.

Members of these teams are trained in one or more disciplines, since an incident may require a response from multiple teams. A car over an embankment may require extrication to remove a trapped passenger, with vertical rescue assistance to safely move the patient up the embankment. In addition to responding in the region, the Cave and Search and Rescue teams are called to assist in incidents across the state.
