Each summer, when school doors close, hundreds of children in the New River Valley lose easy access to the meals they depend on during the academic year. For families already struggling to make ends meet, the summer months bring increased food insecurity. The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry (BIFP) exists to meet this need with compassion, dignity, and community collaboration, ensuring that no child goes hungry when school is out.
Beginning in the summer of 2023, BIFP received a 3-year grant from the Town of Blacksburg which enabled the Pantry to provide an extra bag of food for families with children. This grant has now expired, and we are seeking donations to continue the program. We have reached out to several organizations in the community to help us fund this program.
Our Feeding Children Summer Program is a critical extension of the Pantry’s long-standing mission to support low-income families in Blacksburg, McCoy, and surrounding communities. During the summer months, demand for food assistance rises sharply as families must replace breakfasts and lunches normally provided through school programs. The money that we receive from GiveLocalNRV campaign will allow the Pantry to expand food access specifically for children, providing nutritious, kid-friendly meals and staples that support healthy growth, learning, and well-being throughout the summer.
To meet this need, the Pantry is seeking $30,000 to fully fund the Feeding Children Summer Program from this campaign, grants, and other community sources. This investment will directly support the purchase and distribution of nutritious food for children who would otherwise face hunger during the summer months. We are raising money through additional grants but we are asking the community to help support this endeavor.
