I am very new to Springhouse. The year was still fresh when I was invited by a dear friend to be a part of this intergenerational learning community as a member of the board. I had danced around the community for years with short visits to the Springhouse grounds to walk on the woodland paths, share a bilingual community meal, bear witness to a student presentation or purchase a small treasure from the press. You can see their Generosity card in our home alter above! There was never a time that I would not be welcomed with open arms - quite literally - into the space.
Why did I find myself driving those winding roads through the blue ridges into the valley that holds the Springhouse campus? We are drawn to that which nourishes us. Like the kingfishers we see as we float down the river, swooping down for a sip of water, again, and again, and again.
I think of all of my own teachers, those that were there formally and informally, metaphorically and literally, physically and spiritually holding the space for me. They listened, I heard. They enlightened, I questioned. They showed a way forward, I walked the path through. They were a refuge. They were a catalyst.
This is what Springhouse is for our community here in the mountains of Appalachia. This is what I hope for the emerging child, the evolving adult, the dynamic elder to have access to here in our local landscape so they can move into the world with its transformative power. From the spring, so rolls the river.
So, it seems that in the end, Springhouse has always been with me. And I have a deep faith that the values and mission of Springhouse are also with you. I am asking you to join me in donating, so that Springhouse can be with us all.
Building Beloved Community for 11 Years in Floyd County and Beyond
Springhouse envisions a world where all life thrives. Through our intergenerational school and community print shop, we are committed to creating a culture that takes care of life, one person and one community at a time. At large, the culture we live in does not care for vulnerability. Now more than ever, we need places to practice taking better care of vulnerability and living in ways that are in greater alignment with life.
Springhouse is a place for anyone who wants to practice living in ways that take better care of life. Though their programs have fees, Springhouse is committed to accessibility – no one is turned away for financial reasons.
This work will take generations. Your gift allows Springhouse to continue offering accessible and equitable programs for all.
