MY SPRINGHOUSE STORY
My name is Ambrose Clemons, I am 14 years old, and this is my third year at Springhouse. As a transgender and queer individual, I faced discrimination and struggled in public school. Beyond the struggles of bullying, I was a “gifted student” so I received very little assistance from the teachers. They knew I would pass the SOL testing, so they never paid much attention to my actual education. The teachers had to help those who were on the line between passing and failing, because it influenced their pay. When COVID happened in 2020, I had to switch to virtual schooling. This was worse than public school, and detrimental to my health in almost every way.
In 2022, I began my first year at Springhouse. The cultural differences between the schools was shocking and phenomenal. The moment I introduced myself, I felt a wave of support and comfort. I knew immediately that this was the oasis I needed. On the surface, I was so excited about the thriving queer acceptance and support, and it only got better from there.
The more I’ve experienced over the past three school years, the more I’ve discovered about myself and the world around me. I have learned how to tap into a solution-oriented mindset. I’ve learned how to move with grief and sadness, but also press on and love beyond it. I’ve learned to look for the light in the darkness, and how to appreciate both; how to search within myself and create — how to follow my skills and passions, striking while the iron is hot, and helping to build a better world for myself, others, and the earth. A world where all beings love and are loved unconditionally. A world where all life thrives.
It would mean a lot to me if you could donate to support this incredible community. Springhouse has given me so much support and so many opportunities for growth, and I would love your help in giving back to the community!
Building Beloved Community for 11 Years in Floyd County and Beyond
Springhouse envisions a world where all life thrives. Through our intergenerational school and community print shop, we are committed to creating a culture that takes care of life, one person and one community at a time. At large, the culture we live in does not care for vulnerability. Now more than ever, we need places to practice taking better care of vulnerability and living in ways that are in greater alignment with life.
Springhouse is a place for anyone who wants to practice living in ways that take better care of life. Though their programs have fees, Springhouse is committed to accessibility – no one is turned away for financial reasons.
This work will take generations. Your gift allows Springhouse to continue offering accessible and equitable programs for all.
