Springhouse - Supporting Unique Vitality

In all of my explorations of learning environments focused on the wholeness and agency of both the leaders and the learners, Springhouse stands out as unique as they are an on-the-ground example of holistic, eco-centric, place-based learning. Springhouse is not just an idea, they are a learning community that is evidence of what’s possible when life is at the center. I have been impressed with every interaction I have had with the leaders and the learners of Springhouse.

Now nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in regenerative educational design, Springhouse inspires others who are looking to redesign education from the roots up in ways that foster life.

Eight years ago, prompted by interactions with frustrated teachers at a Peter Block community-building event, I began a search for learning environments that were joyfully enabling authentic learning. That quest resulted in my introduction to an elementary school in London and the making of three videos, with a good start being Saint George's Transformation. The leaders at Saint George's then asked us to write up our observations in Generative Education. That paper became circulated and I began engaging with educators around the world who are seeking new approaches to learning environments that enable both the leaders and the learners to maintain their wholeness and agency. One of those contacts referred me to Springhouse, and I have been grateful ever since.  Springhouse is truly a learning community.  Situated in Floyd, Virginia, many of their students need help with tuition, which is why I am trying to help this way.
