SKYELAR'S SPRINGHOUSE STORY

Hey, my name is Skyelar, I’m 15, and this is the end of my first year at Springhouse. It’s been a really great experience. I moved here from New York, where school was all about grades, tests, and homework. That never worked well for me. I learn better by doing things—being hands-on, creating, and being part of a group.

Springhouse is really different. People actually care about who you are, not just your schoolwork. We focus a lot on learning in real ways—like building things, going on trips, and having deep conversations. It’s not just about facts, it’s about growing as a person.

I’ve gotten to do a lot of art this year—painting, drawing, expressing myself—and I’ve learned to share my ideas more openly. I’ve also learned how to work with others better, how to speak up, and how to take care of myself and the people around me.

The community here is really supportive. Everyone’s encouraged to be themselves, and that’s helped me feel more confident. I’m starting to understand more about who I am, and that means a lot to me. I’m really thankful to be part of Springhouse.

SKYELAR'S SPRINGHOUSE STORY

My son Skyelar would not be in school at all if not for Springhouse. We moved to southwest VA specifically to attend Springhouse because he failed almost every subject at his prior school, even art. He had given up hope and refused to participate. When we got to Springhouse we were assured that Skyelar was welcome and would be valued as an equal despite his challenging past. He quickly came to trust that the staff at Springhouse meant what they said about taking care of vulnerability... and he showed up with plenty of it! Not only would they take care of it, but this presumed "weakness" would evolve into a strength for Skyelar. Instead of being asked to conform to a broken system (something he responded to with anger and rage in the past) he was encouraged to CREATIVELY explore the many dimensions of his complicated personality and as a result learned how to resolve conflict peacefully. In short, Skyelar now whole heartedly believes there is a place for him in school, something he couldn't even imagine a year ago. Please contribute to Springhouse, a place where miracles happen and success is possible for ALL.

Building Beloved Community for 11 Years in Floyd County and Beyond

Springhouse envisions a world where all life thrives. Through our intergenerational school and community print shop, we are committed to creating a culture that takes care of life, one person and one community at a time. At large, the culture we live in does not care for vulnerability. Now more than ever, we need places to practice taking better care of vulnerability and living in ways that are in greater alignment with life.

Springhouse is a place for anyone who wants to practice living in ways that take better care of life. Though their programs have fees, Springhouse is committed to accessibility – no one is turned away for financial reasons.

This work will take generations. Your gift allows Springhouse to continue offering accessible and equitable programs for all.
