Skyelar is Tending the Spring

My name is Skyelar Kessner, and I’m a student at Springhouse. Before I came here, I felt like I didn’t really belong anywhere. But Springhouse changed that for me.

Springhouse’s motto is “Create a world where all life thrives,” and I truly believe in that. Being here has helped me grow in ways I didn’t realize I could. I’ve learned different ways to learn. Ways that actually work for me and I’ve started building real life skills that I don’t think I would’ve gotten in a traditional public school.

One of the most important parts of Springhouse is the community. I’ll try to be honest here 😁, I’m not always the best at being part of a community, it makes me feel uncomfortable and vulnerable, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when I look around at the people I’m surrounded by, it makes me feel happy. It’s something really special. I’ve built meaningful connections, created things I’m proud of, and made a lot of improvement along the way.

Because Springhouse is such a small school, you can’t really avoid people and that’s actually a good thing. When there’s conflict, you work through it, (especially with our really cool justice system) and over time your connection with that person can become even stronger. That’s something I’ve learned here.

Time has gone by so fast. I’m already going into my third year, and it still feels like I just started. I'm still learning things I never thought I'd be able to do. During my time here, I’ve learned about boundaries and how to read the room. I’ve also realized that I want people to understand me better which also means I need to open up more. That’s something I’m working on, and I’ve already made a lot of progress thanks to being at Springhouse.

Springhouse isn’t just a school to me it’s a place where I’ve grown, learned who I am, and started becoming who I want to be!
