Hi there! My name is Kali Broe, and I am a student at Springhouse. Before I joined this community, I went to public school. There, I wasn’t accepted for who I was. I got harassed, bullied, etc. I didn’t have a place outside of home where I felt safe, so I closed off. I Never told anyone how I was feeling, I never opened up about my interests in fear of being shunned for them. I fell into a depressive mental state because of it. Eventually, it all got too much for me, and I had to leave school before things got worse. I stayed at home for a few months. I barely had any friends, so I didn't interact with a lot of people. And then I found Springhouse Community School. When I first joined, I had the same fears as before, but I knew this place was way more accepting of people of all kinds, so I had hope. It took some time, but now I feel way more comfortable to be myself around these people. I’ve started participating in class more, I've been able to give back to my community what it has given to me. I feel safe here, and I have more people who care about me than I could have imagined back then. I used to put myself in this little box; “I need to be like this, be this kind of person” I put so many restrictions on who I was “supposed to be.” But now, being around so many different people, I’ve allowed myself to just be who I really am. I’m fluid, I'm genuine, I'm me. I’m allowed to be entirely different every day, if I so choose. I'm allowed to be myself, and going to Springhouse has helped me realize that. Springhouse had changed me so much as a person, for the better. Of course, I'm not perfect, nobody is. But if I have problems I can get help from my community, and I don't know what I would do without it.
Thank you so much for reading, and I encourage you to donate so you can help Springhouse thrive!
This June, Springhouse is raising $120,000 to sustain the staff, the land, and the practices that keep this community alive, and to support what's next, including working with land and creativity to grow food and make art, attuning to the seasons year round.
You are not just supporting an organization. You are tending a spring, one that nourishes our local community and ripples out, inspiring people and places beyond.
Every gift helps keep the spring flowing. Give Today!
