OUR MISSION: The June Bug Center for Arts and Education (JBC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing music, performing arts, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) through ongoing afterschool programs, classes, and community theatre productions that are affordable to the community.

OUR HISTORY: The June Bug Center was created in 2001 in honor of June McBroom, who had a passion for the arts and education for Floyd County and its citizens. McBroom felt that the children were at a disadvantage due to the lack of facilities available after school and the absence of funds to access these opportunities. The McBroom Foundation fund was then used to start operations of the JBC. As of June 2018, the JBC is now operating through funding from fundraisers, performing art events, afterschool programs, donors, grants, and local businesses.

The main focus of the JBC is to provide affordable opportunities in music, performing arts, and STEAM. In 2010, The JBC started offering afterschool programs Monday through Friday, which include: Floyd JAMS (Junior Appalachian Musicians), LEGO & Robotics Club, Blue Ridge Strings, Computer Camp, Acting Out, Musical Theatre for Teens, and Acting Up. These programs cover a variety of interests such as old-time music, classical music, engineering, coding, theatre, dance, and musical theatre. The JBC also rents out space to local artists to offer affordable classes to the community such as dance, aikido, and yoga. All of these programs are ongoing throughout the school year. Various events are held at the JBC, from poetry nights to reenactments and is host of the reoccurring Blue Ridge Story Space. In 2014, the JBC also became home to the Floyd Community Theatre Guild (FCTG) that provides affordable performances for the community. In 2018, the JBC was voted "Non-Profit of The Year," by the Floyd Chamber of Commerce.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to teach these kids about subjects we are passionate about. Our donors are the reason why we are able to do what we do, offering enriching programs for the youth in the NRV and we are thankful for every cent. The June Bug is a family of creative, intelligent, and caring people in our community and we are so proud of our June Bug community. We thank you for supporting us and our mission!

MEET THE JBC STAFF: The June Bug Center consists of two staff members: Executive Director Shannon Hardwicke and Program Coordinator Resa Mattson. Together, the two run the facility as a team, maintaining the programs, recruiting qualified instructors, cleaning the facility daily, and renovations of the center. Active in the daily operations of the JBC, these two are proud to continue the JBC legacy and offer a safe and welcoming space for students of all ages to participate in enriching Arts, Music, and STEAM lessons. Together, Resa and Shannon have made major renovations possible, created adult programs, introduced a baby music course, increased summer camp options, created new afterschool programs, and gathered a community that is involved and interested in JBC success. Our favorite part of the JBC is getting to watch the love and friendships that blossom from our programs and participate in creating the lasting memories students carry with them when they leave our buildings. We are so grateful for our supporters and are amazed at the support and love we have received. There are many exciting plans for the future and we are honored and thankful for our JBC family for making these plans become reality!
